Our little newborn is now 6 weeks old and we decided to celebrate her first smile ( I swear she smiled at me first, but my husband insists it was a wind and HE actually got the first smile) with a little trip to Hermanus. Yes, we braved the traffic with a toddler and a newborn and set off over the beautiful Sir Lowry’s Pass and it was well worth it! The two munckins did subject us to a 10 min period of ping-pong crying, but we were brave, strong and resilient! The Western Cape weather, though usually reliably unreliable, decided to play along and granted us glorious sunshine all weekend. It seems the best time to enjoy our little country’s beauty is when the tourist season has moved on to the northern hemisphere and we don’t have to flex our Rand’s muscles against the all powerful Pounds, Dollars and Euros.
(Just an aside – keep an eye out for all the winter specials! In fact, I just saw some great restaurant specials countrywide and this is the link click this for winter restaurant specials)
We checked into the Le Paradis apartments (click here to view them) which are across from the ocean and boast incredible views. What a treat to have space to yourself as a family and a kitchen (a luxurious one at that) and be able to settle in for a comfortable stay. When it comes to traveling with children, a kitchen is most welcome and it was such a pleasure to be able to prepare their meals and watch our toddler play in the garden whilst doing so. The apartments are affiliated with the famous Harbour House hotel next door which has one of the most iconic infinity swimming pools on the southern coast of our continent. We enjoyed breakfast there and could watch our little one run around the garden as we enjoyed our Eggs Benedict and perfectly foamy cappuccinos. I sat at the pool with our little baby and had the best view over the bay whilst giving her her breakfast under a little feeding shawl. We even spotted about 100 dolphins in the bay and though it’s not whale season currently, I think I might have seen 1 or 2 of them spying on me whilst my little calf suckled.
Now, a note to parents traveling with their little ones – a little bit of careful planning goes a long way when traveling with kids. I am quite OCD when it comes to lists, but the “Be Prepared” mantra does add to one’s relaxation when you know you can meet most eventualities head-on and with a confident smile.
For example, when traveling with a toddler in the car you must have the following:
- Snacks for the car (dry snacks like biltong, popcorn) I learnt the hard way that yoghurt can and will be thrown at an unsuspecting mom – hence dry snacks that can be passed back with little fuss and mess
- Audiobooks can be downloaded for your kids and make for a great distraction
- Small, inexpensive new toys that can be held in their little hands and keep them occupied
- An active imagination for playing “I spy” games
There are a number of lists available online for what to pack when traveling with kids and I always find it hard to follow others’ lists as we all have our preferences. What I do find is that one needs to prepare a list a few days before the crazy packing instead of just throwing everything into a bag at the last minute. There are some things which you might not be able to find at a 24 hour garage stop at 3 in the morning, like colic drops or kiddies cough syrup and then you’ll thank your lucky stars for your forward-thinking.
