What exactly is #SocialStar? www.socialstar.me
It’s a platform that gives social media influencers (SMI’s) or aspirant SMI’s the opportunity to hone their skills and showcase themselves to a wide audience. Celebrity and iconic social media personalities act as mentors and help the finalists to grow and establish themselves. It was started by Jo-Ann Strauss in 2012 and initially was more of a presenter showcase, but with the seismic shifts in the media landscape, it has become a social media focused platform which enables young talent to differentiate themselves and stand out from the noise.
So, essentially yes, you CAN have your cake and eat it 😉 Social media is such an integral part of our lives and it IS possible to make a feasible business out of it with integrity and authenticity.
In the first competition, the celebrity mentor, Bonang Matheba, accompanied the finalists to the luxurious Royal Chundu Lodge in Zambia. Thereafter, Lira and Pabi Moloi were the mentors on the incredible Reunion Island. Mauritius was next with Africa’s top Instagrammer, Gareth Pon and South Africa’s most followed woman on Instagram, Minnie Dlamini, sharing their insights with the finalists. This year, #SocialStar returns to the island of Mauritius. It will be an incredible opportunity for 3 talented and hard-working finalists to learn from the best in the industry. Samsung is powering #SocialStar for the third consecutive year and will also offer the winner a phenomenal opportunity to further their social media career beyond his or her wildest dreams.
#SocialStar has had millions of social media interactions and meaningful engagement with followers as the contestants have to rely on their supporters, followers, friends and fans to ensure their places are secured. Previous finalists and winners have gone on to achieve great things with 3 previous finalists hosting prime time TV shows, 1 hosting an international show and many creating sustainable careers in social media content generation.
This year, entries for the competition will open on www.socialstar.me in the first week of September. From 7-11 October, the finalists will be doing in depth sessions on the island of Mauritius learning about social media content production whilst enjoying once in a lifetime experiences with some of South Africa’s most recognizable faces in media.
