MOMpreneurs or MOMtrepreneurs – whatever you call it, just BE it!

Soo … this post seemed to get quite a number of you fired up and excited about the prospect of starting your own business. Yes, it’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to work for yourself and finally become your own “boss.” I know how much I dreamed of being my own, but then at times, the dream can be quite a nightmare.

Being an entrepreneur can be quite a lonely ride: one fraught with fear and resistance and sometimes (many times) a negative bank balance. But, it’s also the most exhilarating ride and one that you thank yourself for regularly (maybe not at month-end always though as you pay salaries and overlook your own one for the umpteenth time). Don’t get me wrong, entrepreneurship is very rewarding. I just think it’s important to emphasis though that starting your own (successful) business is not a quick process. Anyone can start a business. Not everyone can create and sustain a successful business. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be bringing you a number of tips – many of them sourced online. The great thing about working in the day and age that we work in is that their is a wealth of information at your fingertips – literally and figuratively. The bad thing about this “great” thing is that one ends up drowning in various sources and not being able to clarify your own thoughts.

CLARITY is an important asset and an underrated one. Be clear on what you want to achieve, how you want to do that and WHY. Have purpose. Profit is a good purpose too – it shouldn’t be an only purpose, but you need to make money to call yourself a business. Don’t be afraid to discuss money and cash-flow.

  1. Work out your working hours and try to create some consistency.
  2. Research and then summarize.
  3. Attend networking events and business training workshops. If they don’t exist in your area, create them.
  4. Create a business plan – a fluid one as you need to be able to adapt if need be.
  5. Have a marketing plan and use social media as a business tool and not just as a way to stalk frenemies and exes.
  6. Keep on top of your admin and learn how to register a business and the tax implications – it’s all online.
  7. Trade with other moms and collaborate.
  8. Value yourself and your time in particular. It’s your most valuable and most finite asset.

I’ll be asking you to submit your business plans in November and then a few of you will be selected for our videos which we’ll shoot to promote your business. Thereafter we’ll vote on who our favourite “Mompreneur” or “Momtrepreneur” or just “ModernMommy” is and that person will win R10 000 and access to a phenomenal network.

Thinking caps on! Dream big.

Lots of love and light!

Jo-Ann

P.S. I bought this amazing plate in my favourite cafe called Blue and it was created by a phenomenal “Mompreneur” –

Love it, thanks for all the tips Jo-ann. As a mommy, you sometimes scared to take chances and just want the best for little one’s and look out for their future… This has opened my eyes a bit and I always wanted my own business. I don’t want to work for someone for the rest of my life and want to leave something behind for my little prince once day to take over….

Inspiring post Jo-Ann! In the process of building my business and as you mentioned it is extremely tough, especially pushing the “not earning much” stages. I also tend to get a tad lonely as it’s something you do by yourself, but the most wonderful feeling of self achievement when you reach some of your goals. The other huge plus working from home so being available immediately soulf my son need me (although he has a awesome nanny which he adores!)
Thx for your blog, never miss it!

I took a leap of faith 2 months ago, my business is still in the baby phases but you are correct in saying it isn’t only about the profit but there is so much rewards that comes along with the territory. I have discovered myself in so many ways and still learning daily how to juggle things. I am excited for the future 🙂
