#MommyMonday on Afternoon Express and La Mer giveaway

So, I’ve recently joined the team on Afternoon Express and we’re celebrating #MommyMondays every week during the show. We’re addressing topics ranging from birthing options to “Eating for Two during Pregnancy” to hard-hitting topics like child abuse and fertility issues. What an honour it is to work alongside incredible women like Bonnie Mbuli and Jeannie D and celebrate motherhood in all it’s glory. I’d love to know what YOU’d like us to discuss on the show so I’d like to offer you a gorgeous gift from my favourite luxury skincare brands, La Mer. We featured the launch of the incredible Moisturizing Cool Gel Cream a few weeks ago and the product has been incredibly well received. It contains the Miracle Broth like the matriarch of the La Mer family – the iconic and rich moisturizing cream, but this one is more a gel-like texture and is a lighter formulation. I have a slightly oilier skin and prefer this one for the day or for when I am in studio and the original moisturizing cream for my night-time care routine.

Please leave your ideas or comments below and share what YOU”d like to see us discuss on the show and mom’s who you’d like to hear from or experts whose brains you’d love to have us pick. Thank you for receiving the show so well thus far and please help us to make it as great as possible.

Lots of love and light,

Modern Mommy, Jo-Ann xxx

I am a mother to four wonderful children~ my 4th just over 10 weeks old. My 2 girls are at school (8 and 5 years old) – How do Mothers manage having a toddler and baby in tow? Both are boys. My toddler is 2.5 years old is very active, but has also started throwing tantrums. I know this is all normal. I don’t own a TV but do not want to fall into the trap of giving in to devices to “babysit” while I need to see to my baby. I have tried including him in tasks but he is quite busy and would jump on the bed or throw teddies into the baby’s cot. It gets even trickier when all 4 are home and I need to do homework, cooking, bathing and I also work from
Home… basically I am asking how to be Superwoman here.

I would love to hear more on the topic of raising gender-neutral children. As mommies, we face a massive task in raising sons and daughters in a world where gender (or to not have one) has become the topic de jour. it’s one of the most daunting debates, and I would love to hear what you have to say about it.

    Hi Jo,
Trust you and baby are doing well and you look stunning being pregnant.

    I have a 12 year old, 5 year old and a 2 year old.
There is a stigma around a child that has been diagnosed with ADHD.

My 12 year old daughter was diagnosed when she was only 7 years old and has been on medication for ADHD since then. I would love to hear from experts what we as parents can do to make everyday life easier for them and for us as parents.

My 5 year old is still as baby as ever, what do I do as his mother to make him understand that he is not the baby anymore but his 2 year old sister.

My 2 year old was born at 32 weeks, we spent the first month of her life in hospital, first in the NICU and then she was transferred to the baby ward. Today she is a healthy, busy 2 year old and we can only thank God for this miracle that he blessed us with.

My topics I want you discuss is the following:
    ADHD in children
How to explain to a 5 year old that he is not the baby anymore
Premature babies and the health and risks that come with it.

    Lots of Love
    Cassandra

I love that you are using your “status” to bring about change in SA – thank you. A topic close to my heart is infertility and the fact that medical aids in SA do not feel the need to cover the procedures involved which are very expensive. Maybe you could interview a spokesperson at a big medical aid scheme and plant the seed. Infertility is a disease just like cancer – why would cancer treatment be covered but not helping couples to fulfil their lifelong dreams of becoming parents.

Hi modern mummy. I am a mummy of a 22 month little girl . Almost 6 months ago I made a decision to leave my job , the first thing people say is you are so lucky that financially you can do that and I yes I am lucky but my husband isn’t a millionaire or billionaire for that matter , it was a choice we had to make because we live in Cape Town with no family support it was just us two full time working parents and our little baby , our lifestyle had to change and we live a fulfilled life on a budget – a topic I think that’s worth discussing as I feel that many live life thinking we needs lots and lots of money to survive but it’s not true , there are soooooo many hacks to living a fulfilled life on a budget and still being able to teach your kids and give them memories they will remember forever . In the past 6 months of me being at home I learnt a lot about providing your child with everything they need without spending too much money .

i only left work a year after I got back from maternity leave as I had to pay back the company that year of service. In that year of working it was the hardest time of my life, the village that was needed to raise our baby wasn’t there , it was late nights, very early mornings , full days of work with about 4 hours of sleep a night . Emotionally I couldn’t do it anymore . I was forced to leave my then 5 month old in a crèche with people I met the day before , my heart sank . On days when she smiled as I left her I walked away thanking God . She was sick every other week in crèche , I used my 3 days of family leave on taking care of her and when I had nothing left they started to use my annual leave, so that meant I never got a chance to take care of myself which no one realized how important it was that I took care of me .it was a viscous cycle ,mostly became we had no one but ourselves to rely on and how can we rely on ourselves if we have full time jobs with no flexibility or limited flexibility ? I felt like I was being pulled from every angle .

October 2017 I resigned , it was a choice my husband and I made . We budgeted , cut down on luxuries , try to live simple lives -I didn’t need a cellphone contract of R500 a month , a gym contract when I didn’t even have the time to sleep let alone gym or Satellite TV. So there were many ways to cut costs .

So 6 months info being a stay at home Mum , I have learnt a few hacks that’s worth mentioning .

    1. Libraries , free, exposure to so much . They even have story time for interaction with other kids and learning .They also have school holiday programs.

2.Nature , take walks , encourage them to do gardening , visit the beach, the local nursery and local parks , children learn best that way . I see kids attending baby bright stars to play in sand pits and I think – why not take your child to the beach ?

    3. Adventure clubs . Please visit their page -an app when other kids can socialize for a small fee while learning so much . I have attended a few adventures and it’s the best thing ever . Being somewhat of a foreigner in Ct I have met so many mums in the same boat as me. We help each other by engaging in discussions and learn so much whilst our kids have fun too .

    4. Year passes – Two oceans aquarium and the national parks of Cape Town has reasonably priced year passes . For like 4 hundred rand your child can visit the aquarium every day of the year! They have place to play , puppet shows and fish !

5.less is more for kids , don’t give them too many toys . Limit everything give them a chance to let their imagination run wild .

    6. Education doesn’t have to be costly – no matter which school your child goes to if you give them a home of love , safely and security they will thrive !

These are a few hacks of living a fulfilled life on a budget and I would love it if you could cover topics like this on your show.

Also something very close to my heart is the parent in the workplace I think we should be living in a time where the mother /parent in the workplace be given more flexibility and opportunity. I have tried flexible jobs in my field of expertise, I have tried reinventing myself something that’s not very easy to do – I am an educated woman a Mum a wife and it feels like my place is only at home because know one wants to give me the opportunity to be a mother and a career woman . Please raise awareness on this . I want my baby to grow up seeing how goal driven I am , I don’t want her feeling like I’m just the Mum that cooks the food and cleans the home , I still want to earn a salary to live a little more comfortably.

Thank you for your time .

    Xx

    Hi Jo-ann

One of my biggest concerns is ensuring my child has all the right vitamins and minerals and also giving the right multi vitamins/immune boosters which keep all the nasty winter bugs at bay.
Would love for you to talk about good multi vitamins and what we should be giving to boost their immune systems to keep them off the antibiotics.

I would like to see content on the steps of adoption legal, red tape and step by step processes involved as many are willing to adopt but put off by incorrect info circulating out there. Not everyone has the privilege of conceiving and some of us have considered the adoption route.

    Hi Jo-Ann,

My sis in law has given birth recently and there are things new moms need to know like there is a difference between caesar babies and babies born naturally and how the best probiotics are those that should be kept in a fridge and probiotics can help put back the bacteria that caesar babies dont get due to not coming through the birth canal. My daughter had hard smelly black poo due to having to supplement with powder milk and I learnt about what caused these things from a dietician at sandton medi clinic.
Sandton medi clinic had post birth classes which were so informative.
Another thing is preparing your breast to breast feed and paying for that breast feeding technician is not always a bad thing to ensure that your baby is latching correctly… my first didnt and had the raw nipple horror story which is why I ended up having to supplement with powder milk and that caused other issues.

My kids are 3 and a half and 6 now and for my own personal benefit, I would like you to discuss how to choose the right school for your child… do we go private and suffer to pay exhorbitant fees as its very difficult to get into a good government school these days. Also why do school fees have to be so exhorbitant… #SIGH

Today as am watching Afternoon Express and you, Bonnie and Austin are discussing Co parenting and being a good parent to your children,it makes me wonder as am due for labour in just 8 weeks time.
We are very excited as this is our 1st pregnancy together with my fiance, the sad part is we both soldiers and constantly away from each other. He is currently studying in Saldanah and am in Bloemfontein we have bought a house last year. We both from different ends of Kzn with elderly parents. I would like it if you could help people in similar situations find a way to balance so much whilst pregnant and after birth because it’s a seriously challenging situation to be dealing with.
The journey is filled with so much concerns as to how to we than raise the little angel being miles away from home and families that were going to help deal with it all.

I’d love to know a bit more about maintaining a balance. I think as a mom, I am struggling to juggle all the balls and constantly feel that I am underachieving when I look at the perfect pictures of moms who have it all on social media. Am I missing something? Please can you give us some tips on how to thrive as opposed to simply surviving? And, have I mentioned that I’ve always dreamt of La Mer – in fact, I’m already feeling the silky texture of the moisturizing cool gel cream on my skin … hold on, it’s actually my newborn that just burped some milk on me 🙂

Please make my actual dream come true 🙂
