The Festive Season comes with almost the same emotional baggage as a huge family wedding. It’s an explosive combination of wanting to spend time with the loved ones, the pressure of wanting to get the perfect gifts, the expectations that come with the time of year, the need to clean up the house and get ready for a new year and the disappointment that perhaps ensues when things don’t turn out as Insta-worthy as one envisaged. And to add to the explosive mix, everyone is just plain exhausted after a year of over-exertion! Yes, tis the season to be jolly, but it can also be one of those times of year you would prefer to just postpone a tad until your emotional being is able to handle the ebbs and flows of intense “family time.”
I have a little confession. Ok, it’s not a real confession as I think it’s something you may have deduced, so technically it’s not a lie. but it may have been implied … I don’t clean our own house on my own all the time. There, I said it. As a South African working mom, I have an incredible co-mom (our heaven-sent nanny) who takes care of the most of the housework. However, at this time of year, serious team work is required and my hubby and I get “down and dirty”. OK, not quite what you were thinking 😉 We enjoy spring-cleaning and have our little cleansing sessions where we tackle cupboards that have been left untouched due to busy schedules and throw out things that we were holding onto for no particular reason other than the “what if?” that never comes.
The chipped glasses that we hoard, the mismatched plates … all of those move on to homes where they are better used and we do a proper detox of the house. My husband doesn’t cringe at the prospect of some housework. He even laughingly and lovingly takes candid shots of me indulging my inner OCD clean queen (exhibit A is me pictured above polishing the white kitchen cupboards with my t-shirt, because I’d noticed a spot). He sometimes shops for the cleaning products (yes, my personal Mr Muscle got me Mr Muscle 5 in 1 kitchen cleaner) and knows a drain cleaner from a oven cleaner.
Just this week, I was running around in a last minute frantic cleaning frenzy before my OCD bestie popped in for dinner – I had run out of the #MrMusle5in1 kitchen cleaner after a particularly vigorous little housekeeping session (and a baking session which left my oven and stove top in a bit of a state) and called him to ask him to pick some up on his way home. He arrived with the latest Men’s Health magazine and a quizzical look implying that he thought that’s what I had meant by him needing to bring home Mr Muscle 😉
He then proceeded to make me a cup of coffee and cleaned up the kitchen himself. Ladies, I implore you. Choose your baby daddy well – there’s nothing more attractive than a man who is able to handle himself in a kitchen 😉
Needless to say, the dinner went well and a big thank you to Mr Muscle – both of you 😉
Love and light and enjoy the festive season cleaning frenzies that are coming!
